Job Summary and Qualifications
As a VP of Coding and Abstraction Quality, you will drive hospital and professional coding and clinical data abstraction quality as the primary executive leader. You will provide executive leadership for coding and abstraction error identification initiatives, quality reporting, quality improvement initiatives, and quality-related communications.
What you will do in this role:
Responsible for the creation, refinement, and coordination of planning, creating, refining, implementing, communicating, and monitoring initiatives to promote complete, accurate, timely, and consistent coding and abstraction while adhering to published guidelines and policies
Communicates and collaborates with key Parallon and HCA Healthcare senior leaders to identify coding and abstraction quality concerns as well as to identify and prioritize people, process, and technology changes to improve the quality of coding and abstraction services
Coordinates the research and response to patterns or escalations related to the quality of coding and/or abstraction across the various Coding and Abstraction departments/teams
Coordinates and confirms coding guidance interpretation standardization with the Regulatory Compliance Support executive leaders, and ensures understanding and consistent application across all coding teams and personnel
Drives the creation, deployment, and maintenance of industry and internal benchmarking data (e.g., code ratios, DRG ratios, CC/MCC%s, volumes), where available, and oversees the coordination of research for outliers and quality improvement action plans as appropriate
Leads the creation and implementation of proactive case mix index (CMI) shift detection for hospitals and divisions
Drives deep analysis of coding and abstraction error root causes and recommends action plans to remediate
Proactively communicates coding and abstraction quality rates and improvement initiatives to HCA executive leaders
Material contributor to the design of effective quality audits/reviews controls assessments, and selection of the most appropriate and effective sampling methodology
Oversight of the selection and development of coding and abstraction education, driven by internal and external audit findings
What you will need in this role:
HIM Bachelor’s degree required
Master’s degree preferred
Minimum of 7 years’ experience in hospital and or physician coding required
Minimum of 10 years’ experience in consulting and/or executive management/leadership required
Compliance and/or abstraction/registry experience preferred
RHIT, RHIA, CCS and/or CPC preferred
