Job Summary and Qualifications

The Director of Application Services manages the day-to-day activities of HCA division IT&S Application Services, oversees the work of the Application Service Managers, develops application support, maintenance plans and implementation strategies to meet the application needs of division computer users. Application Services includes clinical and non-clinical applications, reporting, clinical imaging, database analysis, and web development. The Director of Application Services ensures computer system standards and compatibility with HCA standard information systems architecture, tools, policies and procedures, and interacts with corporate, division and facility level IT&S and executive leadership teams as needed in relationship to technical and customer support issues.

Supervises: Clinical Analysts & Manager, Reporting Analyst, Clinical Imaging Manager and Analysts, Database Analyst, Web Developer, and Non-Clinical Application Analyst

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Ensures development and service delivery of all products, services, and resources within the HCA division Application Services organization. This includes responsibility for ensuring the appropriate level of support for the ongoing functionality of the systems

  • Maintains a leadership role in setting service direction and ensures standards and policies are maintained and compatible with HCA standard information systems architecture, tools, policies and procedures

  • Maintains responsibility for the coordination and development of division-level software application capabilities. This includes coordinating product specifications, development, training and installation timeliness and appropriate testing mechanisms

  • Leads financial management activities, including the creation and maintenance of the division Application Services budget (capital and operational)

  • Leads personnel management activities, including performance management and career development activities

  • Sponsors efforts to develop core competencies, processes, and disciplines. Supports sharing of best practices

  • Leads the IT&S division in application selection, preparation of RFP’s, etc. in conjunction with Division or HCA procurement personnel

  • As a member of the HCA Division IT&S team, is responsible for participating in the development and implementation of the Information Services Strategic Plan

  • Participates in activities to improve departmental and organizational performance. Develops benchmark measures to evaluate productivity within Application Services

  • Fosters increased application standardization and utilization across the division • Identifies possible training and system enhancements. Establishes division application tracking metrics and dashboard reports to track application usage and satisfaction

  • Interacts with corporate, division and facility level leadership teams, as needed, in relationship to technical and customer support issues

  • Utilizes strong communication and management skills to manage technical and business relationships in a matrixed application support environment that includes non-IT&S organizations

  • Maintains and protects confidentiality with regard to all aspects of patient care • Adheres to the Code of Conduct and Mission and Value Statements

  • Assists with other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Strong understanding of Service Desk, application support, Intranet development, and customer service principles

  • A clear understanding of computer systems and corresponding support requirementsStrong written, verbal, and presentation skillsStrong leadership skills, personal drive and ability to see projects through to execution in a matrixed, corporate environment is required

  • Advanced reasoning, math, and language skills should be performed at advanced levels Preferred: Strong analytical skills in budgeting, planning, and policy development and maintenance

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Information Systems or a related field. An advanced degree in Information Systems, Business, Planning, or related field is a plus

  • Seven or more years in an IT environment with project management experience • Direct supervision or staff development experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in multiple technology disciplines

  • Demonstrated critical thinking and decision-making skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills
