Job Summary for the Student Radiographer

The Student Radiographer Assists Radiologic Technologists with general patient care, obtains clinical histories from charts, assists patients on and off table, assists with moving and positioning patients, assists with handling of film plates; uploads images into PACS verifying proper exposure parameters, clears dirty linen and puts clean on beds and stretchers, cleans rooms, makes entries into Meditech & PACS completing exam tracking and entering exam notes, performs clerical tasks as needed, assists with maintaining supplies, transports patients as is necessary.

Responsibilities of the Student Radiographer

  • Utilize information contained on departmental and/or hospital forms to perform work assignment. Includes understanding, communicating and obtaining information accurately.

  • Assist patient in/out of beds, chairs, or wheelchairs.

  • Assess essential patient demographics as it relates to the job and obtains additional information to complete the work.

  • Assist with ancillary department needs to process patients timely within hospital policies and procedures.

  • Distribute departmental and hospital information in the required method (i.e., via electronic interface, forms, vocal and written information) to the appropriate source(s) in an effective and efficient way.

  • Comply with all hospital, organizational and department policies regarding documentation requirements (i.e., abbreviations, forms, computer access, authorizations of medical records with date, time and signature).

  • Contribute towards the financial success of the hospital by handling, gathering, storing and utilizing departmental and hospital information to achieve the work assignment, duty or responsibility.

  • Recognize the potential for increased stress related to dependency needs of others, i.e., children, and elderly parents.

  • Immediately dispose of bio-medical and hazardous waste in labeled bio-medical/ biohazardous waste container.

  • Answer telephone and relays message to Technologist and/or other Imaging Services Staff.

  • Maintain and promotes customer relations.

  • Work as a team with Imaging Services personnel in the triage process.

  • Provide departments/physicians with demographic information in regard to their patients.

  • Transport patients while maintaining safety.

  • Assess patient for special needs (i.e. hearing loss, skin fragility, unsteadiness-fall precautions, etc.)

  • Assist obtaining patient history (including allergies) from patient/guardian.

  • Assist in reviewing prep information with patient in laymen’s terms and provides written material when necessary.

  • Assist in documenting patient information pertinent to exam being performed.

  • Assist in explaining procedures to patient in terms that (s)he understands.

  • Assist in performing exams according to Policy and Procedure Manual.

  • Ensure the patient is comfortable and recognizes needs of patient during exam.

  • Utilize a calm and understanding approach.

  • Provide privacy for patient.

  • Perform other functions as assigned.

Qualifications for the Student Radiographer

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Second year Radiographer Student of an approved radiographer program.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One to two years of experience working in a healthcare setting

LICENSED/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
